French Dip Sandwiches w/ Grilled Onions

Created by: The pretty Little Chef

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thinly sliced deli roast beef
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie or sub rolls, split lengthwise
GRILLED ONIONS:
  • 1/2 large onion cut into small wedges
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
AU JUS SAUCE:
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 beef bullion cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Open the rolls and lay out on a baking sheet.
  2. Cook the grilled onions by adding 2 tablespoons of butter to a deep frying or saute pan and cook on medium heat. When butter is melted add onions, garlic salt & Italian seasoning. Saute until onions are soft & translucent. Set aside.
  3. In the same pan you cooked the onions in add 2 cups water, 2 beef bullion cubes, & soy sauce. You can crush the bullion cubes with a spoon to help it blend quicker. Bring the sauce to a boil, then adjust the heat to simmer and cook for 5 minutes
  4. Add the roast beef to the sauce and simmer for 5 more minutes.
  5. While the beef is simmering bake the open rolls in a preheated oven for 5 minutes, or until the rolls are toasted. Remove from oven & take out pieces of simmered roast beef and add to the rolls, top with grilled onions, then add 2 pieces of cheese. Sprinkle a little sauce on to the top of the sandwiches for more flavor. Place back in the oven and cook until cheese is melted. Serve the sandwiches with small bowls of the warm sauce for dipping.
